Which dog pen should you choose?

Floor protection and layout

Not every dog pen includes a floor. On wood, laminate, carpet or tile, use a suitably sized non-slip waterproof protector and secure its edges so they cannot be chewed or pulled inside. Included “waterproof pads” are model-specific and may not be rigid floors. Check the selected product’s included-parts list.

Panels can often form squares, rectangles or other layouts, but each shape changes the usable area and stability. Dog pen or dog crate?

A pen gives more movement space and is useful for supervised activity. A dog crate provides a smaller enclosed resting area. Some dogs benefit from both: a correctly sized crate placed beside or within a stable pen, where the manufacturer’s instructions allow it.

Panel materials, gates and cleaning

Metal mesh panels provide airflow and clear sight lines; transparent PET, acrylic or glass-style panels reduce visual obstruction but have different cleaning and scratch-resistance requirements. Check the actual material on the product page rather than treating all clear panels as acrylic. Wipe panels with a compatible non-abrasive cleaner and dry metal joins after cleaning.

A walk-through gate makes daily access easier, but the threshold, opening dimensions and latch position vary. Confirm that the gate can open safely in the chosen room. How high should a dog pen be?

Choose height according to the dog’s standing height, jumping, climbing and pushing behaviour. Small dogs can still be skilled climbers, so body weight alone is not enough.

Can an indoor dog pen be used outside?

Only when the product is listed for outdoor use. Indoor-only materials, floors and connectors may not tolerate weather or secure safely to outdoor ground.

Does every dog pen include a floor?

No. Some include a waterproof pad, while others have no full floor. Read the selected product’s specification and add suitable floor protection when required.
