Indoor dog pens with floors: what is included?

An indoor dog pen creates a defined area for supervised play, rest and early training. Choose by the space available, your dog's size and behaviour, and the floor protection supplied with the exact model. A waterproof pad, a rigid floor and a crate tray are different products.

  • Waterproof pad included: the clear acrylic pen, tempered-glass pen and 8-panel metal pen with pad list a waterproof pad. Check the selected configuration before ordering.
  • Separate floor protection needed: the clear PET pen does not list a floor panel. The two gate-only metal pens do not list a full floor mat; small foot pads protect contact points, not the whole floor.
  • Cleaning: waterproof does not mean machine washable, and a waterproof pad is not automatically non-slip. Follow the supplied care label; machine-wash suitability is not confirmed for the pads in this collection.

How to choose the right indoor playpen

Match the height to your dog, not just the breed label

Compare the listed panel height with your dog's standing and reaching height, then account for jumping, climbing and pushing. The acrylic range includes a low 40 cm small-animal option; do not assume that the cheapest or smallest variant is suitable for a puppy. Tall panels alone do not make an enclosure escape-proof.

Measure the room and the assembled footprint

The comparison above uses listed external dimensions in centimetres, not guaranteed internal living space. Allow additional clearance for doors, connectors and walkways. Your dog needs room to stand, turn, stretch and move between a bed and water. A rectangular footprint is length × width; reshaping a panel pen changes the enclosed area.

Choose materials and access that fit your routine

Metal panel pens suit flexible layouts and folding storage. Clear acrylic, PET and tempered glass are different materials: transparent panels help you observe your pet, but cleaning and handling requirements vary. Compare the gate opening and threshold as well as the panel height. Only join extra panels or sets where the exact model's instructions support it.

Protecting carpet, wood, laminate and tile

  • Carpet: cover the full pen footprint with a suitable waterproof protector and inspect underneath daily for trapped moisture. Clean accidents promptly.
  • Wood, laminate and vinyl: use a floor-compatible protective layer, keep grit away from panel feet and check that the backing will not mark the surface. Avoid adhesive fixes unless approved for the flooring.
  • Tile and other smooth floors: check grip and stability. Secure mat edges so they cannot bunch up or become a chewing hazard.

Wipe spills promptly and dry cleaned components before use. For layout, liner selection and cleaning advice, follow our indoor puppy pen setup and floor protection guide.

Puppies, adult dogs and safe daily use

For puppies, prioritise appropriate panel gaps, a secure gate, an easy-clean base and short positive introductions. For adult dogs, allow sufficient floor space and choose a construction that remains stable when the dog moves. Small dogs may still jump or climb; large dogs may push lightweight panels. For young-dog-focused options, browse our puppy pens and playpens.

Keep the pen away from stairs, heaters, cables, plants and anything a pet could pull through the panels. Inspect fastenings, mat edges and latches before use. Introduce the space gradually and supervise initial sessions. Remove collars or tags if they could catch. Exercise, companionship and toilet breaks remain essential; there is no universal safe alone-time limit.

Stop if your dog repeatedly climbs, pushes the panels or shows distress. Whelping and recovery setups need appropriate veterinary guidance and close monitoring; a pen is not a substitute for care.

Need an enclosed resting space instead?

A playpen offers more room for supervised activity; a crate provides a smaller, enclosed rest area. Our three-door furniture-style crate and four-door crate with divider are listed here as alternatives, not as standalone panel pens. Connecting compatible crates does not automatically create an approved free-standing playpen.

Browse all dog crates for enclosed rest options, or the wider dog pen and playpen collection for general indoor and outdoor choices.

Frequently asked questions about indoor dog pens

What is the best indoor dog pen with a floor?

The best option fits both your dog and your room, uses a stable panel height and includes or supports suitable floor protection. Compare the listed dimensions, gate, materials and supplied pad rather than choosing by product name alone.

Do all indoor dog pens include a waterproof floor?

No. Selected models include a waterproof pad or floor layer, while others do not. Check the “what's included” details on each product page and add a compatible protective mat if required.

How tall should an indoor puppy pen be?

The pen should be high enough to discourage jumping and climbing, but height depends on the puppy's breed, age and behaviour. A determined climber may need a different enclosure and closer supervision.

Can an adult dog use an indoor playpen?

Yes, if the pen is large, tall and stable enough for that individual dog. It can provide a supervised rest or management area, but it should not replace exercise, training or social contact.

Can I leave a puppy alone in a pen?

Begin with short, supervised sessions. Whether a puppy can be left briefly depends on age, training, health, the safety of the setup and how calmly the puppy settles. Remove hazards and never exceed appropriate toileting and social needs.

Is a dog pen better than a crate?

Neither is universally better. A pen provides more movement for supervised daytime use, while a crate offers a smaller rest space. Many owners use both for different parts of the dog's routine.
