Puppy Pens & Playpens for Training, Rest and Safe Play

Build a manageable puppy space for supervised play, rest and toilet training. Compare height, spacing, gate access, floor protection and cleaning needs.

What makes a suitable puppy pen?

A puppy pen should create a manageable supervised area with room for rest, water, safe enrichment and—when appropriate—a separate toilet-training zone. It should not be so crowded that bedding and toilet areas overlap. Choose a height and panel design that accounts for rapid growth, climbing and chewing.

For setup planning, follow our indoor puppy pen and floor protection guide. For adult dogs or broader layouts, browse all dog pens and playpens.

Features to compare before ordering

  • Panel height and spacing: assess current size as well as likely growth and climbing behaviour.
  • Gate access: a practical gate reduces the need to lift a puppy over panels and helps maintain a consistent layout.
  • Floor protection: confirm whether a waterproof pad is included or must be purchased separately.
  • Shape and footprint: calculate space for bedding, water and movement in the intended configuration.
  • Cleaning: choose materials and floor protection that can be cleaned and dried according to the product instructions.

Using a puppy playpen for training

Introduce the pen when the puppy is calm and use short, positive sessions. A pen can support toilet training and settling, but it does not replace supervision, social contact, exercise or regular toilet opportunities. Remove unsafe collars, trailing leads and toys that are not suitable for unsupervised access.

If you need a smaller sleeping space as part of the routine, compare our small dog crates. A crate and pen serve different purposes and should each be correctly sized.

Planning the space inside the pen

Keep the sleeping area dry and separated from the toilet-training area where space allows. Position water so it cannot easily overturn onto bedding, and avoid placing beds or boxes beside the panels where they could become climbing steps. Recheck the layout whenever the puppy grows, learns to jump or begins moving the pen.

Before the first session, inspect every connector and latch, cover household cables and block unsafe gaps between the pen and nearby furniture. UK warehouse processing is normally 1–2 business days, followed by an estimated 3–7 business days in transit.

Frequently asked questions about puppy pens

How long can a puppy stay in a playpen?

There is no single time suitable for every puppy. Age, toilet needs, exercise, sleep, training and temperament all matter. Build duration gradually and provide frequent interaction and toilet breaks.

Should a puppy pen have a floor?

A full floor is not always included. A non-slip waterproof protector can make cleaning easier and protect household flooring, provided its edges are secured away from chewing.

Can a puppy climb out of a pen?

Yes. Puppies vary in climbing and jumping ability. Supervise initial use, remove climbable objects near the sides and reassess height as the puppy grows.
